July 2015: Green News, Zucchini Tips, and Catalina Offshore!

California Farm and Garden News:

06.23.15 Catalina Offshore

Our latest project is an install at Catalina Offshore, a fish market in San Diego. We planted lush herbs in 4 boxes outside their entrance. After picking up fresh sculpin from fishmonger Tommy, you can pop outside and find several varieties of basil, thyme, tarragon, sage and rosemary.

What’s Fresh:

Currently fresh for the picking in San Diego: squash and zucchini, lettuce, early peppers and herbs. The winter squashes, like acorn and kabocha, are growing to impressive lengths but won’t be ripe until the fall.

Last week, our Campus Point farm harvested 165lb of zucchini and summer squash for the nearby Green Acre Cafe!

We turn to Smitten Kitchen to answer the age-old-question: what am I going to do with all this squash?? Here is SK’s Summer Squash Gratin with Salsa Verde and the quicker Zucchini Fritter recipe.

National News:

President Obama is going into the ring for monarch butterflies. Their numbers have decreased 80% in the past 20 years. Monarchs travel 2,000 miles annually, from Canada to Mexico and back, surviving on nectar and laying eggs on the leaves of milkweed. Herbicides across the Midwestern farmlands have annihilated milkweed and thus, the monarch.

Obama plans to address the loss of habitat by turning the green along cross-country Interstate-35 into their new milkweed-filled route. You can contribute to the butterfly conservation too, by planting native wildflowers in your yard or garden.

Garden Tips:

Find yourself in a Powdery Mildew bind? Try mixing and spraying this natural anti-fungal spray. Spray onto the entirety of the plant, preferably on an overcast day. Recipe from Seattle Urban Farming Co.

– 1 gallon water

– 1 Tbsp baking soda

– 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

– 1 Tbsp dishwashing
liquid/castille soap

A preventative measure: water your plants at dawn so they aren’t moist through the night. If DIY isn’t your style, stop by your local nursery for an OMRI-certified fungicide.

World News:

The French Parliament voted to outlaw chain grocery stores from wasting food. They will require stores to donate to charities or farms. Expired food will go to the farms for feed or compost. France aims to reduce food waste by 50% by 2025.

Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket chain, will give away unsold perishable food (like bread, fruit and vegetables) to shelters and food centers. Rival stores Sainsbury’s and Morrisons already give unsold food to charities.

This article digs deep into the effects of food waste, and how you can help.
